Good news, Paul has been moved out of ITU in to the High Dependancy Unit of Ward 40 (The Special Brain Unit, they call it). This means visiting times are more strict, 2pm until (I think) 5pm, then again in the evening, I'll update after I visit again this afternoon.

Visiting is 2 until 8. We left just before 8 and they were happy to have us there until then.
When Amy and I went to see him he opened his eyes for quite a long time and Martin spoke to him. To us it seemed like he at least heard if not saw what Martin was saying. Hes made quite a big step forward today.

It's between 2pm and 8pm, we were there until 8 this evening. It was again nice to see so many people there to see Paul and offering support to his family. Let's hope he continues to improve

oops, looks like laura beat me too it

He squeezed my hand when i told him to today, and he kept doing it for david as well. this is a very good sign that he's concious of what we're saying and understands us.

Hello, I'm inundated right now, so does anyone know the address to send a card to? Might be able to get up Thursday.
Sincerely,
Phil
Went to see him today with laura, he has been moved onto three mattresses on the floor so he didn't roll off the bed. He looked much more comfy, sprawled over all three of them and seemed much more calm . He held onto laura's for quite a while and Mark put on some music for him which also seemed to keep him happy. It seemed as if he was more responsive today.

Paul's a complete knob and i hate him so much. I've literally got back to St Andrews and have just cried my eyes out again.
Though he made a little progress today, he's calmer now and it's surley a matter of time until he wakes up.
We're all thinking of you mate.

I've just got back to Edinburgh and i'm crying my eyes out now. I don't want to be here, I want to be back in Aberdeen.
Please get better Paul,

I feel like the weekend has just hit me, now that I'm back in England.
Amen, Holly

Paul wouldn't want us all to be so upset. He'd give us a hug and say everything will be alright. And I know its easier said than done, you know how I've been all weekend, but try and think about how much progress he's made in the last 4 days. He held my hand for quite a long time today and I definately think he squeezed it when I asked him to, twice. We all saw how much calmer and comfier he was today than yesterday and how much more he is opening his eyes. I'm sure he knows we were all there and thinking about him and thats the most we can do at the moment.
*hugs all round*

I think Laura's got it exactly right. Paul is a really strong person and he'll be fighting like mad.

Holly just phoned to say that Paul was opening his eyes more and even waving at people he recognised, so he's becoming much more responsiv

My Dad went in to see him and said he was lying with his head on Martin's lap and he waved at my dad and looked at him when Martin told him to. He is also responding to intructions to move.
He's making great progress.
Its difficult being far away at uni and cut off from everyone else but people have been really good at updating everyone and Paul wouldn't want us to sit around feeling sad.

Hi all
Great news about Paul. Today has been a thoroughly crap day all round but this news has just made cry for all the right reasons.
It's gonna be a long road, but he's just hit the first millstone.
Stuart xxxx
Definitely a millstone. I'm glad you guys managed to tear yourselves away to uni and i know it must be really hard but I also wish you could've seen him today because I'm sure it would have been so reassuring-i kno it was for me and Suzy. He seemed to have made some substancial progress and was responding more directly to instructions.
It really felt like he was opening his eyes to look at us and holding onto our hands.
anyday now

That's all really good news, lets hope he's made even more progress today.
Keep fighting Paul

Just heard from my parents who went to see him today. They said he's been sitting up and drinking fluids as well. He's not speaking but mumbling a bit and he did recognise them, although he's been doing a lot so has been getting tired easily and wants everyone to leave him alone so he can sleep, by burying his head in the matresses (does that ring a bell at all??).

This is from an e-mail my mum sent me earlier on:
Paul 'woke up' yesterday afternoon. Seems more sleepy- tired now than unconscious-tired. The doctors say that generally after 5 days is when the brain starts to mend itself as the swelling is starting to go down. The nurse who's been looking after him all day is so pleased with his progress today. He's still sleeping on 3 single mattresses on the floor but Pat and Matin just sit/lie there with him. I gave them a hand to sit him up this afternoon and he had a small sip of drink from a white plastic cup. He was trying to hold the cup and wanted to wipe his chin of the stuff he couldnt swallow!
He is managing to open his eyes more and his eyelids arent as puffy. Not tossing and turning quite so much. Has had various tubes aned drip sites changed today which he really didnt like and was pretty knackered this pm by the time we saw him.
This is all looking really positive. Stuart xx
I spoke to my mum today who had spoken to Kneeshaw's mum. She said Paul's still at about the same level of conciousness, but he's had an infection from the needles and stuff, and had a temperature but it's gone down now. His parents asked that nobody went to see him today to give him some rest.

Great news everyone, Paul made a huge improvement over the past couple of days. When i left him at about 6.30pm he was sitting up in bed eating fish and chips. He's now concious when he's awake and he's talking to us all the time although its sometimes hard to make out what he says as it's mumbled. However, he was saying all our names, and when he was eating his dinner his speach was much improved to earlier. He's fighting as hard as he can, he told me today that he "just wants to go home", and he was trying to escape from his bed.
These are all fantastic steps forwards and he's improving really quickly. Keep getting better Paul
